April 2009

This month’s newsletter is from Janice as Simon is going through a critical period in his medical studies, with exams approaching.

2009 bursaries awarded: Two girls have been awarded bursaries for 2009. The choice this year was very difficult for all those involved as six children are in need of support. RSVP have therefore agreed to try to find a further four sponsors.

10k Balmoral fundraising run: Mr Ajish Varghese had a double joy on Saturday 25th as his wife gave birth to a healthy baby boy and he completed the 10k on behalf of RSVP. So congratulations all round to the happiest man on the Balmoral run.

Donors’ lunch on 11 Apr 2009: RSVP supporters met together in Aberdeen to discuss our progress so far. The feedback was very helpful and will be discussed at the AGM on May 30th. Thanks to those who gave up a Saturday afternoon to provide invaluable feedback.

Independent inspection report: Secondary school starter packs to be introduced and funding for desks sought as a result of the inspection report produced by Pastor Emmanuel.

New books arrived: In March the school received the support books provided by RSVP but the text books that the government are providing did not arrive in the first term. However we have had news that they have arrived at the school in time for the second term. We are now just waiting to hear confirmation that these cover all subjects and the ratio of books to children.

National primary school test for 2009: The Rwandan government have announced that there will be national primary school tests in 2009 after all. As yet we don’t know what language the test will be in or what it means to those who pass or fail.

March 2009

Project news: Total meals served from 5 to 27 Feb is 2,437. Unclaimed meals are 58, representing 2.32% absenteeism rate.

10K Balmoral fundraising run: Mr Ajish Varghese kindly doing this on 25 Apr 2009. His Just Giving fundraising page is available here.

Rwanda trip in October 2009: A team from UK is visiting the project and conducting feasibility studies for new programmes. Mrs Jean Main’s trip agenda is highlighted.

Trustees AGM in May 2009: Trustees meet on 30 May 2009.

Donors’ lunch on 11 Apr 2009: This is not a decoy to ask for more money – Not at all! It is rather an excellent opportunity to listen to donors. Often ideas can be as valuable as, if not more valuable than, money! The questions are: does RSVP use your money effectively? Are there better ways of addressing appeals RSVP has made on behalf of Bugarama people?

New donation tools from Just Giving: It is now easy to set up one off, regular, or donations by will through Just Giving. Just Giving will automatically process Gift Aid! Great, isn’t it?

February 2009

February has been a month of challenge, progress and loss.

School Meals in 2009

Every day, we are catering for up to 187 pupils from P4, P5 and P6 classes or 10, 11 and 12 year olds, respectively.

Curriculum books: So far, only 26 books have been paid for. The language of education has undergone further changes!

Bursary: Providing 3 more bursaries in 2009

New programmes under consideration: Community lending and Health Insurance.

Loss of 2 of our teachers: 1 through death at the age of 24.

January 2009

There was great celebration at the school this month as the National Test results were anounced. Unfortunately, this turned to disappointment for some as the requirements for secondary school places included “aggregated points”.

This meant only 13 of the 18 children who achieved First Class and Distinction Grades qualified for secondary school places. Click here to read about the children who are going to secondary school this year and for all the news from January 2009.

December 2008

During this school year RSVP served 18,208 meals to pupils studying in classes 5A, 5B and 6. However 2009 will bring greater challenges to the school and RSVP as the government anounces radical changes to the education system. Click here to read more.

November 2008

Read about how the ten children who started secondary school in 2008 got on. This month we also preview RSVP’s projects for 2009 and give some incite to the situation in the DRC. Click here to read more.

October 2008

MacMillan deliver teacher training to all teachers in the Bugarama area and some much appreciated sports equipment is delivered to the school. What impact might the situation in the DRC have on Bugarama? Click here to read more.
